The Republic of Poland is a democratic state ruled by law and implementing the principles of social justice (Art. 2 of the Constitution). The system of government is based on the separation of and balance between legislative, executive and judicial powers. Legislative power is vested in the Sejm and the Senate.

Poland is a member of the European Union since 1st May 2004.

SEJM AT A GLANCE

The Sejm is composed of 460 Deputies chosen for a 4-year term of office by Polish citizens who, on the day of election, has attained 18 years of age. Elections to the Sejm are universal, equal, direct and proportional and are conducted by secret ballot. The Sejm has its seat in Warsaw.

EU MATTERS

The European Union Affairs Committee is the Sejm organ specialized in European Union matters. It is responsible for scrutiny of EU draft legal acts and other documents, as well as for adoption of opinions on positions that Polish Government intends to take in the process of EU decision-making. It is one of the standing committees of the Sejm, appointed at the beginning of each term of office for its entire duration.

The EU Affairs Committee tasks and responsibilities are laid down in the Standing Orders of the Sejm and in the Act of 8 October 2010 on the cooperation of the Council of Ministers with the Sejm and the Senate in matters relating to the Republic of Poland’s membership of the European Union.
